Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University's women's basketball team was overpowered Tuesday night by visiting Eastern New Mexico 83-58 in both team's season openers in Silver City. The Zias took an early lead and never looked back as they out-rebounded and out-shot the Mustangs in easy fashion.
Eastern took a 40-26 lead into halftime and came out with a fury shooting 52% from the field in the second half to Western's 34%. Eastern also grabbed nine more boards than Western and took advantage of the Mustangs 26 turnovers.
The Mustangs were led by Tannesia Manley (Jr, Sierra Vista, AZ)'s 14 points while Sarah Bennetts (SR, Melborne, Australia) added 13. Manley also grabbed eight rebounds.
Eastern got double figures from Riikka Lehtonen (17), Tiana Bryant (16), Erica Cook (12) and Heather Brown (11).
The Mustangs will face CSU-Pomona on November 18 in the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix.
